One of the earliest southern cities, Georgetown has character that can be described as historical in nature but vastly big in personality. Georgetown is a seven square mile town that was established in the early 1700s and relative to other pre-colonial regions; Georgetown has not grown drastically throughout the years. This known fact keeps Georgetown having a southern charm like non other. Originally this beautiful historical town was known as one the nation’s leaders in industrial pursuits and business. Through manufacturing in the Steel Mill to rice cultivation, Georgetown thrived. Rice cultivation was so popular that today you can visit Georgetown's Rice Museum and explore the details of that particular era in entirety.
Georgetown still serves as a manufacturing hub but now offers an unlimited world of attractions and activities both on and off the water. One of my favorite things to do in Georgetown is dining and shopping. Old southern customs can be found on a walk through town when experiencing the quaint shops and southern cuisine. A collection of classic antique stores and modern boutiques, the shopping in Georgetown is second to none for special gifts. After shopping, make sure you stop in a local restaurant and taste modern takes on old southern recipes. Visitors are advised to sample the seafood, as the region is remarkably close to both the inlet and ocean waters. You will be amazed by the smells and tastes of good southern cooking that can be found downtown Georgetown. If southern customs and seafood are not to your liking, pop in Rollin Local and grab a $5 burger on Fridays or check out the specials board for other great options. This local restaurant is personally one of my favorites in town!
Guest to Georgetown can opt to stay in beautiful converted historic homes that now serve as B&Bs, local inns, or a handful of national chain hotels. More than likely, if visiting the area, you will want to enjoy the outdoors Georgetown offers. There are parks, public boat ramps, picnic shelters and trails throughout Georgetown. If you want more adventure sign up for deep-sea fishing or keep calm and ride in a buggy downtown to hear historical stories of the past. Regardless of what you choose to do, Georgetown will have something to offer everyone. It truly is a place with a legacy, hospitality and sweet southern charm.
